To the south of Thornbury Castle lies the Georgian city of Bath with its Roman Baths, renowned architecture and excellent shopping. Further south, but still within easy motoring distance, are historic attractions such as Stonehenge, Glastonbury Tor and the ruins of Glastonbury Abbey, where King Arthur and Queen Guinevere are said to be buried. Here too you'll find numerous stately homes to explore - all with beautiful gardens and family treasures.

Only a few minutes drive away is the famous Slimbridge Wetlands Trust, a wetlands bird reserve created by the late Sir Peter Scott. To the west lie the ruins of medieval Tintern Abbey, set in the lovely wooded Wye Valley, and the famous Welsh border castles such as Berkeley, Raglan and Chepstow, built to 'keep the Welsh out of England'. Joust at Berkeley Castle is the UK's largest and most spectacular mediaeval festival and is well worth a visit, as are Painswick Rococo Gardens. And finally, to the east, lie the Cotswolds, beautiful touring countryside with quaint villages, traditional market towns and, of course, Cheltenham, where many a fortune has been lost and made at the town's racecourse, home to the famous Cheltenham Gold Cup. The popular Chepstow Racecourse is also only a short drive away.

Enjoy a Hogwarts School Harry Potter experience. Whilst staying at Thornbury Castle, visit Hogwarts School.

If you can tear yourself away from the castle, you might like to visit Gloucester Guildhall, one of the county's liveliest, most diverse venues for live entertainment or enjoy a trip back in time to the Gloucester Folk Museum. Both can be reached in just under 40 minutes from Thornbury Castle.

Cardiff, the innovative capital of Wales and home to the Millennium Stadium and Cardiff International Arena, is just under an hours drive away.

Bristol Filton Airport, birthplace of many important and exciting aviation projects such as the Bristol Freighter, Bristol Fighter, the Britannia and, of course, Concorde is just a short drive from Thornbury Castle.
