Top 10 of the Best European Stone-Walled Accommodation Posted on 03/08/2007
Five British Isles castles have made it into the top 10 of the best European stone-walled accommodation.
Second in the list compiled by company TripAdvisor is Thornbury Castle near Bristol described by one traveller as being ''a genuine medieval castle''
We are naturally delighted to be recognised as one of Europe's finest luxury castle hotels. The awards represent a double success for von Essen hotels with sister property Chateau de Bagnols near Lyon in France also ranked in the top five.
Thornbury is the only Tudor Castle in England operating as a Hotel. This beautiful 16thC castle stands in 15 acres of regal splendour - it was once owned by Henry VIII! - surrounded by its vineyards and Tudor garden and is renowned for being one of the finest country house hotels in the world..
The Castle is an unforgettable experience of true luxury amidst genuine medieval bedchambers, massive four poster beds and a highly acclaimed restaurant.
Everything about the Hotel epitomises grandeur, and we are honoured to be recognised in this way.
Other UK castles in the top 10 are Inverlochy Castle at Torlundy, Fort William, Scotland (in fourth place); Swinton Park at Masham in North Yorkshire (seventh); and Castle Stewart in Inverness, Scotland, (eighth).
TripAdvisor communications director Michele Perry said: ''What’s great about these top castle hotels is that there is a wide price range, allowing anyone to stay in one of these ancient fortresses and have a truly unique experience.
''These castle hotels particularly stood out among our 20 million monthly visitors because they offer modern amenities and great service to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable stay.''
