History and Heritage Stay

History Break

Thornbury Castle has long and very interesting history, originally conceived and constructed by Edward Stafford in the early 1500s, he was the only man to rival King Henry VIII’s wealth and status at that time. Half way through construction, Stafford was found guilty of treason meaning the king took control of the castle. Henry VIII actually visited Thornbury Castle, with then wife Anne Boleyn, during a Royal Tour in 1535 as an outbreak of the plague in Bristol meant they had to do a detour. Today you can stay in the very bedchamber which they both once slept in!

If you want to find out more about Henry VIII’s connection to the castle and other fascinating architectural artifacts from the time, then this September we will be running history tours* every Friday and Saturday afternoon from 4pm with our local Thornbury historian. Why not step back in time and live like a king for the day with our Heritage and History Stay?
